The thermal pools at Recanto Cataratas are open year-round. How to enjoy winter in Foz do Iguaçu, and why off-season travel pays off.

Yes, you can swim in Foz do Iguaçu in winter. At Recanto Cataratas, the outdoor pools use naturally thermal water, and there’s also a covered area with heated water. That changes how you think about the trip: the cold stops being a reason to wait and becomes part of the experience, with warm water on one side and cool air on the other. Keep in mind that Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so winter runs from June to September.

What "Thermas" in the name means

The former Recanto Park Hotel was renamed Recanto Cataratas Thermas Resort & Convention in 2014, after an expansion and renovation of more than R$ 30 million. "Thermas" refers to the natural thermal springs, with running water, that feed the outdoor pools. The resort is in Foz do Iguaçu, the Brazilian city on the Triple Frontier with Argentina and Paraguay.

Besides the outdoor thermal pools, there’s a heated indoor pool and a kids’ water park. In practice, families stay outdoors on sunny days and move under cover when the weather turns.

How to enjoy the pools on cool days

In winter, the contrast between air and water temperature is exactly what makes a swim feel good. A few tips:

  • Use the sunny hours for the outdoor pools and save the indoor pool for late afternoon and rainy days.
  • Pack a sweater and a large towel for the walk between the pool and your room.
  • Drink water: warm pools and winter sun can dehydrate you too.
  • Check the hours for each pool area at check-in.

Why travel outside peak season

In Foz do Iguaçu, crowds concentrate around Brazilian school holidays and long weekends. Outside those periods, trips tend to have a different pace: more choice of dates and room types when booking, shorter lines at attractions and more room to unwind.

Iguazu Falls, named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011, is open to visitors year-round, and Itaipu Dam and the Parque das Aves bird park also fit a winter itinerary. The formula is simple: sightseeing in the morning, thermal pool in the afternoon. If your schedule is flexible, midweek dates outside the holidays make for quieter days.

Spa, dinner and evenings in winter

Cool weather calls for indoor plans. The Java Jiwa SPA by B.Well, surrounded by greenery, offers therapies and massages. At night, the Entertainment Plaza brings together London Pub, inspired by London architecture, NY Vibe Disco Club, bars and cafés. For some friendly family competition, there’s bowling, a game room and an arcade.

At the table, Aranda Restaurante and Bromélia Brasserie cover regional, Brazilian and international food. Save room for the Pudim Recanto, the resort’s condensed-milk flan, which won the Pudim de Ouro (Golden Pudim) 2025 award in the Visit Iguassu contest.
